In the Viking era, the summer solstice was marked by visiting healing water wells and lighting bonfires to ward off evil spirits. The pagan belief held that in the period around the solstice, nature reached a peak of energy, with humans, plants, soil and even springs filled with the power of the sun, and that from that point the hours of daylight would gradually diminish. For pagan mystics, the days around midsummer were the best time to gather herbs and medicinal plants.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After Christianity arrived in Denmark, these activities were generally frowned upon, and the solstice celebrations were attached to the feast of Saint John the Baptist, whose birthday falls on 24 June. “Hans” is the Danish diminutive for Johannes, giving the tradition its name. Danish midsummer Sankt Hans was an official public holiday until 1770. Even after it lost its formal status, the desire to celebrate was so strong that an act outlawing the tradition in 1743 went unobserved and was quickly withdrawn.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The bonfire tradition has endured as the centrepiece of Danish midsummer Sankt Hans. In the 1920s, it became common to affix a witch effigy made of straw and cloth to the top of the fire. The tradition was likely imported from Germany, where burning witch dolls on Walpurgis Eve was already established. According to the folk belief, when the witch burns she flies to Bloksbjerg, the mountain Brocken in the Harz region of Germany, where a great witch gathering was thought to be held. The practice is a remembrance of a dark period in Danish history. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, roughly 1,000 people convicted of witchcraft were burned alive in Denmark and Norway. The last victim in Denmark was Anne Palles, burned in 1693. Some Danes regard this part of the tradition with mixed emotions. Others see it as a ritual that has been emptied of its original cruelty and now functions as folklore. The debate resurfaces periodically, and some communities have replaced the witch with a wizard or dropped the effigy altogether while keeping the bonfire.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Song of Danish Midsummer Sankt Hans\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The most commonly sung song at Danish midsummer Sankt Hans celebrations is “Vi elsker vort land” (“We Love Our Country”), also known as Midsommervisen (“The Midsummer Song”). It was written in 1885 by the Danish poet Holger Drachmann, with the original melody composed by P.E. Lange-Muller. In 1979, the Danish pop band Shu-bi-dua composed an alternative melody, and since then either version has been used at celebrations across the country. The song is patriotic and melancholic in equal measure, celebrating the Danish landscape and national identity in language that most Danes have a complicated relationship with. It is a song about loving a country that, for many of its citizens, represents both comfort and contradiction. Singing it at a bonfire on the longest evening of the year, surrounded by neighbours and strangers, is one of those collective rituals that feels both deeply sincere and slightly absurd. Godsbanen is a former railway goods depot that has been converted into a cultural centre and creative hub, hosting exhibitions, workshops, concerts and community events throughout the year. The bonfire at Godsbanen drew families, students and residents from across the city. People brought blankets and picnic baskets. Children ran around the fire. The Sankt Hans speech was delivered before the bonfire was lit, as is customary, addressing Danish values, community and the passage of time. Then the fire was lit, the witch burned, and the singing began.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In Copenhagen, Danish midsummer Sankt Hans celebrations took place along the harbour and in parks across the capital, with bonfires at Amager Strandpark, Frederiksberg Have and numerous other locations. The atmosphere at both cities was a mix of the ceremonial and the casual. Beer was drunk. Hot dogs were eaten. The experience of returning to Denmark for Danish midsummer Sankt Hans carried a particular quality of dislocation. In Cape Town, late June means the winter solstice: short days, cold Atlantic fronts, the south-easter replaced by the north-west wind bringing rain. The light disappears by half past five. Everything contracts. Arriving in Skanderborg or Aarhus or Copenhagen in late June and stepping into seventeen hours of daylight, into air that smells of cut grass and salt water and woodsmoke, into a sky that refuses to go fully dark even at eleven at night, is a sensory reversal that takes days to adjust to.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After a decade spent documenting life in Cape Town’s townships, bus stations, community centres and nightclubs, the rituals of Danish midsummer Sankt Hans felt both intimately familiar and strangely distant. The bonfire is the same bonfire you stood at as a child. The song is the same song. The people around you are speaking a language you dreamed in before you learned to think in English and Afrikaans. But you are different. The years in South Africa changed the way you see ritual, community and gathering. You have watched people build community under conditions that would make a Danish bonfire look like theatre. You have watched people sing together in rooms where the stakes were real, not ceremonial. Danish midsummer Sankt Hans is a homecoming. But home, after a decade in Cape Town, has become a more complicated idea than it used to be.
